Teusner Avatar Shiraz 2016
We fondly refer to Avatar as Joshua's more mature sibling. Taken loosely, avatar means transformation. This wine is a similar blend to Joshua, but spends 16 to 18 months maturing in neutral old hogsheads. This, along with the slightly different blend ratio, provides us with a wine of more earthy, savoury complexity.
Initial classification of the components for this wine takes place straight after vintage, when Joshua is being blended. Parcels that are recognized for their suitability to barrel ageing are held back, as individual components, in seasoned cooperage for up to 18 months.
This patience provides Avatar with a slightly more brooding, savoury nose, emphasizing the earthy undertones of the Mataro, rather than the sweet fruit of the Grenache. The tannins have also been given the opportunity to complex, giving a fine, elegant and silky structure to the palate. The wine finishes clean and well balanced.
